Once you play the future games going back is kinda hard since Rune Factory makes vast improvements between its sequels. Rune Factory 2 is nice too. Well, if you wanna play them all, start from the top, going back to 1 after playing the later games is gonna be hard. User Info: Raidken. So in my opinion, start from the 1 and progress from there. You can then witness how this series evolved over time.
But if you just want to play with more modern gameplay, start with RF3 or RF4. Both are pretty similar anyways.

I would personally just say skip the first one. I actually hated it to the point where I didn't bother with the series again until 3 came out. RF1 is painful, yes, mechanically speaking. Yet I find that it does has an enjoyable story and likable characters.
